Daily Drawing Update - Week Seven

So this week has been really busy as I have been moving into my new house along with my 5 housemates. The place is coming together and is feeling more like a home but it took a while to get rid of the creepy crawlers that had decided to rule the place. This gave me an idea for this weeks daily drawings.
#43 - House Spider.
#44 - Ant.
#45 - Ladybird.
#46 - Carpet Beetle.
#47 - Fly.
#48 - Bed bug.
#49 - Stink Bug.

New Film Camera - Nikon FA

After a couple of attempts of using disposable camera's to get some film photographs, which developed poor, grainy results I asked my Dad if he still had his old film camera. To my surprise, he did! He dug around in the attic for a while before pulling out his Nikon FA and multiple lenses that he had bought years ago and kindly passed it onto me. It took a bit of sprucing up (internal clean and new batteries) before it was working like new again. Now I've never really been good at photography, especially when it is all manual so this is a good opportunity for me to learn and understand the mechanics behind it. So I've spent a bit of time playing about with the aperture, ISO and shutter speed to try and learn how they all work together. I thought I'd post some of the photographs, bare in mind that I was just practicing and so there isn't anything amazingly fantastic, it's all purely experimental.
I really enjoyed taking these photos and I love the Nikon FA camera! I will definitely be using this more often to take photographs with as I love the fact you can't see a preview of what you have taken a picture of. Sometimes you take a while to finish a film so you forget some of the things you captured, then it's a nice surprise when you finally get it developed. I have definitely learned more about photography by doing this so hopefully my documentation will be much better when I start university again in September. Thanks for the camera Dad!

Art Journal Review - Aesthetica

While visiting home I was on the lookout for an art and design journal in the local newsagents seeing as I didn't have access to the university library. Thats when I came across Aesthetica - a British art and culture magazine that covers art, design, photography, film, music and more.
Front Cover of Aesthetica, Issue 65
While reading through Aesthetica's 65th issue I came across an interesting article called Existence Abandoned by the American photographer Lori Nix. In Nix's series The City, she has photographed dilapidated libraries, abandoned bars and deserted shops in great detail. But these buildings have never actually been visited by Nix, instead they have been crafted by her. From her apartment in New York she has carefully fabricated these locations to be photographed with great thought of lighting, scale and space to make these stunning photographs.
At first glance I thought these photographs were of real places which shows how well they are made. I particularly like the attention to detail in the background of each photo making sure that there are things in the distance (other than the walls of her apartment) to give it all perspective. The added building facades in the distance make the scenes so much more believable. I also love how she has managed to capture the juxtaposition of human existence and death with the remnants of human activity and the apocalyptic feel of the destroyed buildings. The places feel like they have a history, a past, yet they are quiet, devoid of any enterprise which makes them beautiful. What do you think? If you want to see the full portfolio click here and it will take you to her website.

Daily Drawing Update - Week Six

Taking a breather and drawing more abstract patterns last week helped me as it took off the pressure slightly, pressure that was stressing me out and clouding my thoughts. Now I am back with inspiration and ideas to propel me for a few more weeks at least! One of my main thinking times is when I am in the shower. I love to stand under the warm waterfall and contemplate life and other random things - 'shower thoughts'. I have used this time to think about things I can draw to keep me motivated, and now I have a good list of themes for future weeks. Here is the first from that list...

#37 - Heel.
#38 - Shoe.
#39 - Wedge.
